Not far from the re-created Globe Theatre, this place is a "Walk-Through Wine Atlas." The brick-walled, high-vaulted brasserie was converted from abandoned Victorian railway arches and is located in the revitalized Bankside neighborhood (which was once the entertainment center of London). Inside, you'll find both the Vinopolis Wine Gallery and the Cantina Restaurant. Although many patrons come here just to drink wine, the food is prepared with quality ingredients (very fresh), and the menu is sensibly priced. Start with a bit of heaven like the pumpkin-and-Parmesan soup with lime-flavored crème fraîche, or the chargrilled asparagus with artichoke hearts and rocket. Dishes are flavorful and never overcooked. Squid fried in a crispy batter won us over, along with its side dish, wasabi slaw. The rump of lamb was tender and perfectly flavored, served with a polenta cake. Seared blue tuna arrived with sliced warm new potatoes, plus a tomato confit and a chorizo salad. Many of the other dishes have the hearty, rustic taste that defines the trattorias of southern Italy. Naturally, the wine list is the biggest in the U.K.
Main courses £14-£16 ($22-$26).Open: Mon-Sat noon-2:30pm and 6-10:45pm; Sun noon-3:45pm.Reservations required.Credit Cards: MC, V.Tube: London Bridge.
